Grab Your Camera and Check Out These Local Fall Attractions

Fall weather is setting in, but that doesn't mean the fun has to stop. Check out our list of fall activities and attractions within a short drive of Kalamazoo.

Paw Paw Wine & Harvest Festival
Approximately 30 minutes from Kalamazoo, the Village of Paw Paw will host its annual Wine and Harvest Festival this weekend, Sept. 5-7. The event is sure to offer something for everyone with highlights including carnival rides, fireworks, a car show, an arts and crafts show, a duck race, grape stomping, a parade, and a vineyard bike tour.

Allegan County Fair
A tradition 162 years in the making, Allegan's annual fair is worth the 40 minute drive from Kalamazoo. The fair opens Friday, Sept. 5, and runs through Saturday, Sept. 13. In addition to agricultural exhibits, a historical village, and a well-attended parade, the fair offers grandstand entertainment. This year's schedule includes tractor pulls, demo derbies, a singing competition, and performances by Kid Rock, Lady Antebellum, Hunter Hayes, and Florida Georgia Line.

Gull Meadow Farms
The apple barn and bakery season at Gull Meadows has been underway for nearly a month. Located at 8544 Gull Road in Richland, the attraction's petting farm, pumpkin patch, wagon rides, corn maze, and all of the family activities in Pumpkin Lane will open on Saturdays and Sundays beginning this weekend; weekday hours begin Sept. 18.

Crane Orchards & Crane's Pie Pantry
Crane's Pie Pantry and Orchards are nestled between Fennville and Lake Michigan at 6054 M-89. Apple season is underway with 17 varieties available for picking daily. A corn maze is also open for exploring with hayrides and cow train rides to be added on Saturdays and Sundays beginning Sept. 27. Call ahead to verify weather conditions for outside activities.

Open since 1916, the pantry is a great destination in any weather. Serving handcrafted meals and desserts, the pantry is filled with historic items of interest and oddity! Fresh pressed cider, homemade pies, crisps, and desserts are also available.

Gene "the Pumpkin Man" Rhodes
Located just west of Kalamazoo on West Main (22637 M 43 Highway West), is the land of orange better known as Gene "the Pumpkin Man" and his plethora of pumpkins, gourds, and fall produce offerings. Just about everything imaginable is orange, including Gene's Cadillac. The local legend will open for business in mid-September and remain open through Nov. 1.

Harvest Moon Acres
A quick trip to Gobles will lead you to Harvest Moon Acres at 18725 M-40 Highway. The farm offers a variety of attractions including a 5-acre corn maze, fun zone, petting zoo, and hayrides and will open for the 2014 season on Sept. 20. The corn maze will open for Flashlight Nights Saturdays in October.

The Planets Series from Bell's Brewery

Looking for something a little more adult this fall? Consider winging your way through the solar system one sip at a time. The series kicked off last month with the release of a double India pale ale inspired by Mars. The next release is set for October. Venus will be a blonde ale brewed with honey, apricot, cardamom, and vanilla.
