Kalamazoo's Brewery Breakdown0
It was only a matter of time before we wrote about our city’s beer scene. Consisting of lifelong Kalamazoo residents and a lone Grand Rapids transplant, the KzooConnect editorial team appreciates good craft beer. To prove this point, we decided to create a list of some of the best local breweries that Kalamazoo has to offer!
If the breweries on our list were part of a 1990s sitcom family, Brite Eyes Brewing Co. would probably be played by Dave Coulier. A huge proponent of “keeping Kalamazoo weird,” this Southtown brewery expertly blends a bit of their offbeat personality in every batch of beer they produce. Not that you were asking, but Irish Godfather and Love Monger are two of our personal favorites!
The best way to describe our next entry is as a place where flavor and culture meet for a hearty high-five. Referred to as Kalamazoo’s “Keepers of Craft,” One Well Brewing prides itself on its sustainably brewed selection of craft beers. If you’re looking for suggestions, we find Bad Adz and Only Gose To Show, Lime to be particularly refreshing.
In December 2017, a father/son duo from Decatur formally introduced their brews to the good people of downtown Kalamazoo with the opening of Final Gravity Brewing Co. In less than two and a half years, this location has become a weekend staple thanks to creative beers like Eye Opener and Fortitude. While they may be relatively new to our community, Final Gravity Brewing Co. has quickly made a name for itself in the craft beer scene.
After more than three decades of business, there aren’t many people who don’t recognize Bell’s Brewery. Thanks to beloved standbys like Hopslam Ale, Two-Hearted Ale, and Oberon, Bell’s Brewery has become an indelible part of Kalamazoo’s culture. For those looking for a reason to visit, Expedition Stout recently celebrated a milestone birthday. Make sure to celebrate this occasion with the 35th Anniversary Expedition Stout Reserve while you can!
Closing out our beer bonanza is a brewery that was started about an hour’s drive to the northwest before it established a Kalamazoo branch in 2019. Since opening its doors in 2005, Saugatuck Brewing Co. has balanced developing new beer styles while maintaining a consistent profile. For the fall season, we would recommend Impaled It, an amplified rendition of the brewery’s American Pale Ale.
We hope this list gave you some direction on where to go for great local beer. Before we sign off this week, we want to remind all our readers to imbibe responsibly and adhere to the safety standards followed by each establishment!
