Kicking Off Summer Right

Summer Kickoff

Last Friday’s summer solstice means one thing; time to buckle down and plan warm weather excursions. Luckily, Kalamazoo offers a number of fun activities to take part in. So, sit back, relax, and find out what community offerings are on tap this summer.

For the music lovers, The Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo (The Arts Council) has what you need. With more than 33 concerts and 6 venues across Kalamazoo, Oshtemo, Portage, Parchment, and Richland, Summertime Live offers something for everyone. With artists like Zion Lion, May Erlewine and the Motivators, Glenn Miller Orchestra, and many more, this year’s events are sure to be a hit!

Are the visual arts more your speed? The Arts Council still has you covered. Put the sunshine to good use and peruse stunning pieces during the July and August Art Hop events.

Foodies can get their grub on at several events throughout the city! On July 20, the Taco & Tequila Festival will occupy Homer Stryker Field and feature live music and lucha libre, also known as professional wrestling for those that are unfamiliar!

If ribs are more your scene then mark Aug. 1-3 off in your calendars. Kalamazoo Ribfest is back in all of its rib-sticking glory (pun intended) with live performances from Everclear and The Spin Doctors!

In addition to these great culinary options is the return of Lunchtime Live! for its sixth consecutive summer. Hosted by Kzoo Parks, Lunchtime Live! takes over Bronson Park every Friday from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. through Aug. 30. Enjoy delicious cuisine from Kalamazoo’s food trucks while listening to local musicians.

Kzoo Parks also has an option for film lovers as well. At Summer Cinema, attendees can watch Hollywood blockbusters like Black Panther or Incredibles 2 on a large LED board under the stars. With free admission, these events are perfect outings for the whole family.

Would summer truly be complete without cold libations and good friends? We don’t think so! Every Saturday from 1-4 p.m. walking tours of the breweries are offered in downtown Kalamazoo!

Lastly, when the weather gets a little too hot to handle, remember that South Haven is less than an hour’s drive from downtown Kalamazoo. In other words, some of the most stunning beaches in the region are just a daytrip away!

We hope that this guide has given you an idea of how to make the most out of your summer. Now go forth and live it up!
