Local Kalamazoo Breakfast Spots

It has been backed by medical professionals that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And on top of that, breakfast food is just delicious. Whether your go-to is pancakes, bacon & eggs, omelets, or the regional favorite known as “breakfast stew,” Kalamazoo has a plethora of establishments to satisfy those breakfast cravings. We took a closer look at a few of our local favorites.

10. Rykse & Co. Market and Eatery

The original Rykse’s Restaurant was founded in 1986 and served breakfast and lunch for almost 40 years before closing its doors in 2018. Established on Q Avenue in Texas Corners in 2017, Rykse & Co. Market and Eatery is a fast-casual concept spinoff of the original restaurant and uses recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. They serve up traditional morning favorites such as omelets and scrambles. Rykse & Co. has a full-fledge scratch bakery that makes everything from bread to pies, cakes, and cookies. They also offer Rykse On the Run meals, ready-made dinner meals available for pick-up.

9. Uncle Ernie’s Pancake House

Located on Portage Street near the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport, Uncle Ernie’s has been locally owned and operated since 1959. Serving breakfast and lunch, you can’t go wrong ordering Uncle Ernie’s namesake buttermilk pancakes. We also recommend their Belgian waffles or French toast. Both the pancakes and waffles can be ordered plain or dressed up with chocolate chip, banana nut, and nutty options.

8. Cosmo’s Cucina

Located above O’Duffy’s Pub in the Vine Neighborhood, Cosmo's Cucina is a second-floor hideaway that delivers big flavors. Open Wednesday through Saturday for dinner, Cosmo's dedicates Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to breakfast. Menu favorites include the Smoked Salmon Scramble, featuring smoked salmon, spinach, red onion, capers, tomato, and mozzarella folded into three scrambled eggs. Looking for steak and eggs instead? Order their The Cow Jumped over the Moon, a six-ounce steak cooked as you like, plated up with two eggs, redskin potatoes, and toast.

7. Maggie's Café

Part of the fabric of Kalamazoo since 1984, Maggie’s Café has been a long-time favorite of Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College students. While the location of Maggie’s Café has changed a few times over the years, their famous Breakfast Stew has stayed the same. Replicated by many, this dish is a grilled skillet of scrambled eggs, hash browns, chopped ham, bacon, sausage, and shredded cheese. It comes with an option to add veggies. Maggie’s is currently located in the Stadium Shoppes on Stadium Drive.

6. Nina’s Café

This quaint cafe has been locally owned since 1998. Located in the Tiffany's Village shopping area on West Main Street, Nina’s Café offers breakfast and lunch options. Breakfast is served during all operational hours and on the menu you’ll find monstrous six-egg omelets with toast. You can also sub down for a three-egg omelet, which for the average person is more than filling. Another recommendation is Joel's Down Home Favorite, featuring your choice of two eggs and crispy hashbrowns on top of a half order of biscuits and gravy.

5. LaRue's Family Restaurant

Open daily from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and located on Stadium Drive, LaRue’s has an old-school diner vibe and serves its food in that same style. Not a lot of frills, but it sure does hit the spot. You can get breakfast “anytime” or order off their lunch menu, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better bang for your buck. You can find two eggs with potatoes and toast or biscuit on the menu for less than $5. An important note, LaRue’s only takes cash or check but does provide an atm inside for convenience.

4. 600 Kitchen and Bar

Technically they call it “brunch,” located at The Foundry in downtown Kalamazoo, 600 Kitchen and Bar features breakfast foods on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. While it is one of the more pricey options on our list, 600 Kitchen and Bar is a farm-to-table restaurant serving modern selections like Millennial Toast with avocado, queso fresco, and chili flakes. They also have a Double High Quiche of the Day as well as sharables and several vegetarian options.

3. Studio Grill

Located on West Michigan Avenue in downtown Kalamazoo, Studio Grill has been a place where people, food, and art have come together since 2010. Featuring breakfast and lunch, you won’t regret any choice off the menu. Their staples include omelets, skillets, and scrambles. Don’t be afraid to take a peek at their extensive burger menu, you will find breakfast options there too. The Brunch Burger is stuffed with jalapeno and topped with bacon, a hashbrown patty, egg, siracha aioli, and sausage gravy. Studio Grill is also known for their Serrano Sauce, which will add spice to any meal.

2. Breakfast at Tiffiny’s

The first Breakfast at Tiffiny’s was opened in 2011 and its claim to fame has been all-day breakfast with a touch of southern flare. Currently, there are two Breakfast at Tiffiny’s locations - one in Kalamazoo, in the Maple Hill Pavilion on West Main Street, and one on Centre Avenue in Portage. Tiffiny, the owner and founder, has put her own spin on breakfast stew, creating variations like vegetarian Hippie Stew, Greek Stew made with gyro meat, and Southwest Stew featuring chorizo. The menu also offers southern favorites such as chicken and waffles, country fried steak, and fried green tomatoes. Looking for healthier options? Tiffiny made sure to include “skinny” dishes as well as vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices.

1. Crow’s Nest

The top breakfast spot on our list goes to Crow’s Nest, located on South Westnedge Avenue in the Vine Neighborhood. Crow’s Nest once offered late-night service, but currently maintains hours between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., seven days a week. A favorite menu item is Captain's Breakfast Sliders - two buttermilk biscuit sandwiches with scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheddar cheese, topped with breakfast gravy. Yes. That is a thing. A great vegan option is the Queen Anne’s Revenge Scramble, featuring a combo of zucchini, mushroom, sun-dried tomato, red onion, and a vegan basil-walnut pesto. Another dish to try is their take on the classic North African and Middle Eastern dish Shakshouka.

All of the stops on our list are popular, so do not be deterred if you experience wait times, they are all worth the wait.
