As one of Michigan's first trust-only banks, Greenleaf Trust (www.greenleaftrust.com) has more than 90 employees working from offices in Kalamazoo and southeast and northern Michigan. They are locally owned and managed in Kalamazoo and deeply rooted within the community.

In May, the Center for Generational Kinetics and Best Companies Group named Greenleaf Trust as one of 75 Best Places to Work for Millennials 2015. The list, which comes on the heels of news that millennials are now the largest workforce in America, is the first of its kind to identify companies that excel at recruiting, developing, and retaining top millennial performers.

Based on 4,000 organizations in the United States and more than 500,000 employee surveys, Greenleaf Trust was named to the list of 75 top employers.

"There are many preconceived ideas about millennials in the workplace. At Greenleaf Trust, we believe in talent," said Karen Baldwin, CSP, Vice President, and Director of Human Resources. "We take the time to get to know each individual and discover their talents so we can provide challenges that are appropriate for their growth.

"Our millennials always rise to the occasion. They are smart, they work hard to meet goals, and make an impact. They are dedicated and want to make a difference in the lives of others and they listen to learn and grow."

Karen continued, "Provided with an environment that supports all generations, we ve seen amazing things from our millennials. We look forward look forward to the impact they will make on the future of our organization."

Greenleaf Trust works hard to recruit and find those that grew up, went to school, or have family in Kalamazoo and bring them back to Kalamazoo from wherever they may have started their careers.

More than 48 percent of Greenleaf Trust employees are graduates of a Kalamazoo-based university or college and 38 percent are Western Michigan University graduates. More than 45 percent of the Greenleaf Trust team falls into the millennial age group.

"Everyone is very proud of this award because this recognition acknowledges our leadership, innovation, and commitment to employing the fastest-growing generation in the workplace. Greenleaf Trust has created an environment where millennials want to work and build their careers," said Bethany Cwalina, Executive Assistant to the President.

When the millennials at Greenleaf Trust were asked to describe themselves, they shared, "We are hopeful. We are collaborators. We are connected. We are innovative. We are social. We are cause driven. We are loyal. We are millennials. We are your teammates."

Greenleaf Trust chairman and founder William D. Johnston said, We know that culture wins and culture with a great workplace environment and great talent really multiples the opportunity to win.

Employee engagement is a top priority at Greenleaf Trust. In fact, 11 years ago they formed a Communications and Culture workgroup who meets monthly to focus on improving the communication and culture of our organization. Workgroup members are selected from all divisions to ensure fair representation.

In addition to a constant focus on improved communication strategies, this group organizes multiple social events throughout the year to show employee appreciation, nurture relationships, build trust, and encourage strong relationships.

Greenleaf Trust employees are encouraged and supported to make meaningful investments in the communities in which they live and work. Lots of companies do this, but Greenleaf Trust has found ways to make it really count and involve everyone. Volunteering and philanthropy are part of their work place culture. They make it fun and often organize team events.

Here's what one of Greenleaf Trust's millennial said when asked about this subject, "Being part of Greenleaf Trust means I'm an active member of my community. As a company, we engage in both giving and volunteering events to enrich our local non-profit organizations. The work we do for others make us a stronger team."
