Promise Team Spotlight - Amanda Bashore0
This month’s installment in our Promise Team Spotlight series demonstrates what happens when one finds joy in pursuing a different path than what was originally planned. So without any further delay, let’s meet Amanda Bashore, Promise Pathway Coach for The Kalamazoo Promise (The Promise).
“While at U of M, I went back and forth about engineering,” she recalled. “If I switched my major, I would have added another year to my education, so I remained in engineering even though I had other interests.”
“I fell in love with talking to students about what they wanted to do and where they wanted to go,” she said of her time in the program.
Reinvigorated by the experience, Bashore earned a master’s degree in counseling from CMU and started her new career as a school counselor. During a move back to Kalamazoo, she heard about an opportunity as a Promise Pathway Coach with The Promise and decided to set out on the next chapter of her life.
As a Promise Pathway Coach, Bashore works directly with Kalamazoo Public School students and assists them in filling out Promise paperwork, financial aid documents, college applications, and other preparations for life after high school.
“I talk with students about what path they want to take and how they can leverage The Promise to get them to where they want to go,” she explained.
Bashore often uses her own story as a means of guidance for her students, reminding them to pursue what makes them happy.
“I like being able to talk to students about how I went into a field I didn’t enjoy and how I wished I would’ve thought about what I valued,” she said. “At the end of the day, I wasn’t passionate about manufacturing and engineering. That wasn’t what got me out of bed in the morning.”
Bashore is appreciative of every conversation she gets to have with students, reminding them that they have the options and resources to carve out a future that they will find fulfillment in.
Now a parent, Bashore looks forward to raising her son in the community that she grew up in. It is her hope that he will be able to use The Promise’s offerings to his path towards a career he loves.
Kalamazoo appreciates the effort you put into our future leaders, Amanda. Keep up the excellent work!
