From Pondering to Podcasts

Trust me when I say, I didn't wake up one day and decide to become a 'podcaster." But sometimes continuous improvement takes you to unexpected places. And that's where it began for me.

As a small business owner with a unique market niche, I am keenly aware of the need to constantly evolve the way we work and conduct our business. In early 2017, I began to explore new growth strategies, which highlighted the need to enhance our company website and change the way I connected with my clients and candidates. In those months of researching, listening to webinars and podcasts and reading countless whitepapers, I learned a lot!

One thing that really struck me was that people's preferences for how they receive information varies a great deal. Some love social media (and there are MANY options here of course), some love video and YouTube, while others prefer blogs or podcasts. And some people use a variation of all of the above!

I learned that when it comes to connecting with our customer today, we needed a broad based, multi-faceted plan. And there's no "one size fits all" about it.

Intrigued and eager to learn more about podcasts, I invited a friend from church (who is a podcast expert - thank you, Tom Schwab) out to coffee to teach me what I didn't know. I came away from the meeting feeling excited about the potential of incorporating something new into our company's communications mix.

At Welsh & Associates, we talk to business owners and leaders every day. We hear countless stories from small to mid-sized companies throughout the region who are doing new and novel things in their businesses. Unfortunately, only a handful of people ever hear those stories because there's just no good place to tell them. Maybe - just maybe - we could help change that.

Podcasts made a lot of sense to me. I'm comfortable with public speaking and I interview people all day long for a living. I'm also fortunate to work with a great communication team (shout out to LKF Marketing, Mike Rogers and Maryann Flynn) and to be connected with a great number of people and companies who have amazing stories and best practices to share. Add all of these ingredients, mix well and bake slowly, for about 6 months. And The Welsh Wire was born.

In January, 2018, The Welsh Wire debuted and the weekly podcast began that also features a (monthly Facebook Live show). Podcasts highlight great small to mid-sized companies doing great things. Stryker and Kellogg's we 'love ya,' but we can also learn a lot from the novel and innovative approaches being taken in the operations of places like Keystone Solutions Group, The Gilmore Car Museum and Consumers Credit Union.

This continuous improvement project has definitely taken on a life of its own. The website was enhanced alright, including a new project that I really didn't see coming, but made so much sense to do. Lifting up the great work of our small business clients and friends throughout the region is both a joy and a privilege for us and we hope The Welsh Wire helps fuel continued success for them, too.

And maybe, just maybe, we might make a few new friends along the way.
