Promise Team Spotlight - Donté Hudson0
Since 2006, The Kalamazoo Promise (The Promise) has assisted more than 8,000 Kalamazoo Public Schools graduates in achieving their educational goals. As Alumni Coordinator, Donté Hudson’s job is to reconnect The Kalamazoo Promise with its alumni through outreach, engagement, and communications.
“We are trying to reconnect with individuals that have taken advantage of The Promise in any capacity,” he shared. “We are interested in what they are doing now, if they require any help with job placements, or need to use our resources. We also ask if they are available to volunteer or are interested in becoming involved with our mentorship program.”
A graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School’s (Kalamazoo Central) class of 2008, Hudson used The Promise to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science pre-law at Michigan State University. With a firsthand understanding of how the transition from high school to college works,, he uses his knowledge to fulfill his role as Alumni Coordinator.
“When I am talking with high schoolers that are still trying to figure out their path, I try and draw from my own experiences to discover what motivates them,” he explained. “Promise Alumni are typically a little older and have experienced a little more. They usually know what they want their path to be. I just try and meet them where they are.”
Growing up, Hudson was surrounded by people who supported him and his goals. The guidance he received in his younger years has inspired him to pay it forward.
“I have always been involved with my community,” he shared. “I am an assistant basketball coach at Kalamazoo Central and a mentor at Spring Valley Center for Exploration. Connections developed through experiences like these have helped open doors for me here at The Promise. This job allows me to continue what I have been doing at a larger level. I want to help pull the next person up in life.”
When he’s not reconnecting with Promise Alumni, coaching, or mentoring, Hudson enjoys experiencing all that Kalamazoo has to offer.
“It is a diverse place where you can meet people from all walks of life,” he attested. “There is so much to see in our city.”
It was great making your acquaintance, Donté. We wish you the best of luck in your new position!
